Crazy Rich Asians (Movie) Review

*SPOILER ALERT*

This movie has been so overly hyped ever since it was released around a week ago. I myself have seen this movie twice and thought that it's about time I gave my thoughts on it. I haven't read the book yet so I had no prior knowledge about the storyline apart from what I saw in the trailers.

Right off the bat I realised that this movie was very Chinese-Asian centered. It's definitely a breakthrough for Hollywood to come out with a "yellow" only movie but like let's be real here. The screenplay is supposed to be about a crazy rich Chinese Singaporean family which is fine because that's what the author wrote about. What I found like kinda sad was that even in the shots of the streets or surroundings, the people were all Chinese which doesn't even represent the other races in Singapore. Eventhough I'm not Singaporean, I am Malaysian and we're pretty much the same so I do get where some people are coming from when they criticise the movie in this sense. Another thing I heard was that some people were making noise because the maid in the movie was a Filipino. Okay to be fair, yes not all maids are Filipino but alot of them are so I don't think that was such a big deal. Because honestly, if they put any other race as a maid, someone would have made noise about it. They had to cast someone so just LET IT GO.

So, my thoughts on the movie... I personally liked it even though it's a pretty cliche, predictable storyline. Every RomCom in Asia is centered on the men's rich family and how his mother or grandmother doesn't approve of his choice of girlfriend. Very typical but I liked the way that they portrayed it on screen. The actors were all great, very familiar faces that I love. The comedy is amazing with a few local references that will make many of us smile. The best part for me was probably the wedding as well as the mahjong scene (I'm assuming Rachel won because I don't understand mahjong). The wedding scene was just so beautiful, so over the top, I almost cried (but didn't because people were around me) seeing Colin's face as he saw Araminta in her wedding dress. The mahjong scene was so intense and it really showed how much sacrifice there is to love. I could totally imagine myself in that situation and feel what Rachel was feeling. It just hit me really hard, that scene.

Overall, the movie is worth watching and it would be amazing if everyone could support it, be open to more asian movies coming to the Hollywood scene and just enjoy it. If you look past all the Chinese related things (especially the music), I think you'll really like the movie. I'm not saying the Chinese stuff is bad, I'm not... I mean that if you don't understand it or can't relate to it, you can still watch and enjoy.

That's all for this post, I might be getting the book soon and I'll try to read it as quickly as I can and post up a review on that as well as some comparisons between the movie and the book for your ease :') Have an amazing weekend and watch the movie! :D
